9 Best Portable Grills to Kick off the Summer

1. Weber Q2200 Liquid Propane Grill

The Weber Q2200 is a revolutionary product that comes from a well established brand in the grilling industry. As many of the smaller grills are run on propane, the Weber Q2200 is extremely quick to heat up and hold its convection. This grill is 280 square inches. The grates are close together so you can grill large and small items ranging from shrimp to beef. The cooking grate included for this grill is made of cast iron Porcelain.

This product is relatively light, making it perfect to bring out around tailgate time. It is a lot larger than other portable grills, though the quality increases also. In terms of the dimensions of this grill, it measures at 15.5 by 51.4’w by 19.5. In addition to the main grill, there are two trays attached that can hold cooked items.

A unique feature of this grill is that it comes with grilling directions to enhance the flavor of your meals. This grill also includes a five year warranty, so if you experience any issues with your Weber, it can be returned hassle free. For the propane, the grill delivers 12,000 BTUs of heat energy per hour, and can be simply started by the push starter on the side of the grill. One issue with this grill is that it is more expensive than other portable grills at around $270, though if you are willing to splurge on a great product, the Q2200 is a great model.

This grill runs on propane, and comes with a push starter button so theres no need to buy matches.

On the sides of the grill, there are two adjustable side tables. Their sides are durable and can fold down back into the grill to make it portable. These sides are great at holding implements or allowing for whoever is cooking to prep on the side. In terms of the power of this product, the Coleman Roadtrip produces up to 20,000 BTUs of energy. The grill uses a 16.4 oz cylinder of propane. For disassembly, the legs fold down quickly and efficiently.

This product comes on wheels, so you can move around freely. The Road Trip is about average in the industry in terms of price, coming in around $250. If you want a grill that can keep up with you, the Coleman Roadtrip is a great option to look at.

3. Weber 10020 Smokey Joe

Sometimes the best product line is the only that stays the same over time. The Weber Smokey Joe Grill is the definition of an “old faithful” in the industry, having a product that pioneered the industry in portable grilling This grill is easily moveable, and if you want to grill for two, the Smokey Joe adds more flavor than the rest.

This Weber runs on charcoal which is different from most portable grills. An issue with this is that the charcoal typically takes a while to heat up and be difficult to keep at a constant heat. Additionally with a charcoal grill, there can be a large mess left behind compared to a simple twist off on a propane grill.

Looking at the specifications of this grill, it is equipped with a fourteen inch grilling tray, weighs 9.5 pounds, and the dimensions are 14.2/14.5/17 inches. With a fourteen inch tray, this grill can hold up to around five burgers at a time.

The problem in this tray is that it can be difficult to fit multiple large pieces of meat on it at once, such as steak or pork loin. This grill comes with an ashtray at the bottom and a sive at the top to allow one to control the heat. These grills are relatively cheap coming in at around $35.

6. Weber Jumbo Joe

Stacked with the same capabilities of the prior Weber grill, the Jumbo Joe takes the basic features of a charcoal grill and puts them on the biggest scale. With the charcoal grill, we see the same limitations of the grill being messy. The larger size does make it possible to cook bigger pieces of meat such as steak or pork tenderloin. The larger grate of this model can hold up to eight burgers, rather than the five of the original version.

The dimensions of this grill are 19.75/20.5/19.75. Making it pretty large compared to other portable grills. The grill weighs 18 pounds making it still relatively easy to transport. The grill includes two air vents, making it possible for the grillmaster to set and change a temperature.

One limitation of this grill is that one still needs to set aside time in order to wait for the grill to heat. The black porelin cover of the grill is built to hold its heat and not rust over time. For assembly of this product, the packaging comes with a three dimensional instructional detailing how to put the grill together. This grill is perfect for trips to the beach, or grilling at a family bbq.

7. Char-Broil Grill2Go X200 Portable TRU-Infrared Liquid Propane Gas Grill

One of the limitations of the smaller portable grills that run on propane is that they don’t always produce the best flavor in the meat being cooked. That is not the case for the Char Broil Grill2Go. This travel ready product gives you the same restaurant style char broil flavor on the road. For travel purposes, this product comes with a durable bag to make the grill from destinations.

Weighing in at around 20 pounds, the Char Broil is a little heavier than some of the other grills that are portable, although the bag should make transportation much easier. Other appliances included with this grill are a hose, and adaption, and a control valve.

The grill itself is built of cast iron, and the dimensions are 23.7/15/13.6. The frame of this grill was built to be durable and withstand inclimate weather without rusting. To ensure that no heat escapes outside of the grill, there are latches on the front to hold the grill compact. The 200 square in stainless steel grilling grate is dishwasher friendly.

The cooking system is through infrared technology cooking the meat equally and evenly compared to other grills that have a tendency to cook cuts of meat differently. This grill is currently selling around $180, though if you want a high quality grill that can follow you on the road, the Char Broil Grill2Go is a top option.

8. Camp Chef Big Gas Grill

The Camp Chef big gas grill exemplifies what it means to run a cookout. This grill comes with everything one needs beginning with the cast iron grates. The grill is topped off with a vented lid so you can control how much heat is staying in the grilling chamber.

Despite being mobile, this grill comes with 600 square inches of cooking area which is much larger than other portable grills. The Camp Chef uses a full sized propane tank to power and can produce up to 30000 BTUs of heat. Additionally, there are three adjustable knobs included on this grill giving you full control over your cooking experience.

The legs at the bottom of the grill are adjustable, and when they are being used the grill stands at 31 inches. Another feature of this grill is that it comes with a lot of space for prep work on the side. Many grills that are portable neglect to add a workstation even though they can really come in handy. Similar to some of the other nicer grills included, this model is a bit on the pricier side coming in at around $250.

9. Fox Outfitters Quick

The Fox Outfitters Quick Grill is a unique advancement on the simplistic style of Weber grills we looked at earlier. This grill uses charcoal for heat, and is made of stainless steel to avoid rusting. This product is perfect for a budget camping trip as it only weighs 4.8 pounds, and can fold down to fit in anyone’s hiking bag.

This grill is fairly small, with dimensions of 13/13/8.5 so it is not quite as suited for tailgating as some of the other grills. The Fox Outfitters Quick Grill also comes in a reusable bag if you are taking it on the go. Since this is a charcoal grill, it does need to be taken care of as charcoal is very messy wherever you are. Overall, this is a grill for those out on the trail looking to use basic equipment to make a meal.
